€8 Millions in funding: what Europe’s Latest Cloud-Edge-IoT Open Calls Reveal About the Future of Digital Infrastructure
When we talk about Europe’s digital future, the conversation usually drifts toward sovereignty, decentralisation, interoperability: big ambitions. On 12 February 2026, the CEI-Sphere webinar translated the discussion in something tangible. Ignacio Lacalle and Rafael Oliveira Rodrigues, from two major European initiatives O-CEI and COP-PILOT shared the open calls of €8 million in cascade funding into third-party projects. For SME, startup, or tech provider working across the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum, this is a strategic opportunity.
O-CEI’s 10% success rate is proof of market demand
When O-CEI launched its first open call, it received 249 completed applications from 37 countries. Only 24 were selected, a 10% success rate might feel intimidating, but it actually signals something positive: the European Cloud-Edge-IoT space is vibrant, competitive, and scaling fast.
O-CEI was choosing technology providers capable to add concrete value to eight existing large-scale pilots in areas such as maritime, agrifood, and 5G EV charging.
This is what they learned:
- Clarity is critical: applicants who aligned tightly with pilot needs stood out.
- Added value beats novelty: projects that strengthened orchestration, energy efficiency, or interoperability scored highest.
- Ecosystem thinking wins

The Second O-CEI Call
O-CEI’s next open call (expected Summer 2026) shifts from “upscaling” to “uptake.” It will fund eight new use cases extending the deployment of O-CEI open platform as blueprints, either in additional use cases within the 6 sectors or proposing pilots into new domains with €200,000 per project.
If you operate in a regulated or data-sensitive sector, this is your opportunity to:
- Integrate into a €31M project spanning 60 partners across 19 countries
- Leverage an established Cloud-Edge-IoT backbone
- Demonstrate interoperability in real cross-domain environments
- Position your solution for replication beyond the pilot
COP-PILOT offers €200,000 but the real value is industry access
While O-CEI reflects on lessons learned, COP-PILOT is just launching its first open call (February 16 – April 17, 2026). Up to eight projects will receive €200,000 each.
But here’s what makes it compelling: you must deploy into a specific, real-world industry cluster, such as:
- Business integration in Mining
- Valencia Smart City
- AgriTech Transformation and Sustainability Initiative
- Edge Intelligence for Energy Grid Reliability
- Smart Vineyards & Sustainable Winery Ecosystems

You’re integrating into operational environments with defined stakeholders, infrastructure layers, and orchestration frameworks already in place.
For SMEs especially, this is powerful:
- You gain access to industrial environments that would normally take years to enter.
- You validate your technology within structured, open-standard architectures.
- You increase your credibility across European markets.
Mentorship and ecosystem access
Both O-CEI and COP-PILOT emphasise something many funding schemes overlook: mentorship and ecosystem integration. Successful sub-projects are connected with technical mentors from the main consortium. Communication platforms and physical events are used to foster collaboration between winners.
O-CEI highlighted another important lesson: evaluation reports are designed to be constructive. The goal isn’t simply to filter applicants it’s to strengthen the ecosystem.
If you apply and don’t win, you still gain:
- Structured external evaluation
- Clear feedback on market alignment
- A stronger foundation for future calls
