Cloud-Edge-IoT in Agriculture | From Data to Practical Impact

Agriculture is one of the sectors where Cloud-Edge-IoT technologies are already delivering practical value. Across fields, stables, greenhouses and dairies, sensors, machinery and vehicles generate large volumes of data every day. The challenge is turning that data into timely decisions in environments where connectivity can be limited and energy resources need to be used carefully.

The CEI-Sphere workshop, CEI in the field: Cloud-Edge-IoT Applied to Agriculture Use Cases, will explore how distributed computing is supporting real agrifood operations across Europe.

Bringing data closer to the farm

Many agricultural applications cannot depend on sending every piece of data to a central cloud platform. Autonomous machinery, livestock monitoring and energy management often require fast responses, reliable local processing and secure control over what information is shared.

Cloud-Edge-IoT technologies make this possible by processing relevant data closer to where it is created, while sharing only the data needed across the value chain. This can help agrifood operators improve operational visibility, reduce unnecessary data transfers and support more informed decisions on the ground.

Learning from large-scale pilots

The workshop brings together clusters and pilots working within two large-scale initiatives: COP-PILOT and O-CEI. Speakers will share practical lessons from a range of agrifood use cases, including:

  • Agritech transformation and smart logistics across the supply chain
  • Smart recharging and energy efficiency for robot tractors in large fruit-production fields
  • Sustainable Halloumi cheese production, supported by edge intelligence and controlled data sharing between stables and dairies

Although these use cases operate in different agricultural contexts, they raise common questions. How can systems work together across fragmented environments? How should agricultural data be governed and shared? And how can edge infrastructure deliver useful intelligence without increasing energy demand?

A discussion for the agrifood ecosystem

The session will close with a discussion of the shared Cloud-Edge-IoT challenges emerging across the pilots, including interoperability, data governance and energy awareness at the edge.

The workshop is open to technology providers, researchers, agrifood operators and policymakers working at the intersection of agriculture, energy and distributed computing.
